Editorial and data policy
Figures come from primary sources wherever one exists: the regulator, the central bank or the statistical body that published them, rather than a report about them. Every figure carries its reference period and the date we retrieved it.
Three labels are used and never mixed:
| Label | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Official statistic | Published by a regulator, government body or recognised statistical organisation, reproduced with a link |
| TradeAnswers calculation | Worked out by us from source data you can check, with the arithmetic published |
| TradeAnswers estimate | Derived from several sources where no official figure exists, and labelled as an estimate everywhere it appears |
Where the evidence does not support any of the three, we publish the gap instead of a number. Reference pages are reviewed at least annually and whenever a source updates.
Common questions
Can I quote TradeAnswers in an article?
Yes. Name TradeAnswers and link the page you took the figure from. There is no approval step and no fee.
What exactly does the CC BY 4.0 licence cover?
Our own tables, charts, calculations and statistical analysis. It does not cover data published by the BIS, the FSCA, SARS, the Reserve Bank or the JSE, which stays under their terms.
Do you have logos and a press image?
A PNG logo is available here. SVG, a 512 by 512 PNG and a 1200 by 630 press image are available on request while we finish preparing them.
How do I report a figure that looks wrong?
Email contact@tradeanswers.co.za with the page and the source you think is right. A material correction to a figure is noted on the page rather than made quietly.
Found an error or an outdated figure?
Tell us and we will fix it. We would rather be corrected than be wrong, and a material correction to a figure is noted on the page rather than made quietly.
If you hold a primary source that closes one of the gaps on our statistics page, send it and we will credit you.
