i What this calculator does

Shows the real monthly instalment and the real total cost of a financed car in South Africa, including the three things dealership quotes tend to leave out: the once-off initiation fee that gets added to the loan, the monthly service fee, and the balloon payment that lowers the instalment while adding interest. Enter the price, your deposit, the rate you were offered and the term, and compare the instalment with and without a balloon.

The balloon is the number to understand. A 30% balloon on a R350,000 car drops the instalment by hundreds of rand a month, but R105,000 is still owed after six years and you have paid interest on it the whole time. The calculator puts that trade-off in one place.

Frequently asked questions

What interest rate do banks charge on car finance in South Africa?

Vehicle finance is linked to prime, 10.5% in 2026/27, with a margin of roughly 1% to 5% depending on your credit profile, the deposit and the age of the car. Used cars and longer terms usually attract higher margins.

What is a balloon payment?

A portion of the price, often 20% to 40%, deferred to the end of the term. It lowers the monthly instalment but you still owe it after the last payment and have paid interest on it throughout. At the end you pay it, refinance it or trade the car in.

Is the initiation fee negotiable?

The National Credit Act caps it; R1,208 was the common 2026 figure on vehicle finance. Banks typically add it to the loan, so you pay interest on the fee as well.

Should I take a 72-month term?

Longer terms lower the instalment but increase total interest, and the car often loses value faster than the balance falls, leaving you owing more than it is worth for years. Shorter terms cost more a month and far less overall.

Does the calculator include insurance?

No. Comprehensive insurance is compulsory on financed vehicles and is paid separately. Add it to your budget on top of the instalment.

Can I settle the loan early?

Yes. The NCA allows early settlement of vehicle finance, and for loans above R250,000 the bank may charge up to three months' interest as a settlement penalty. Below that, no penalty applies.
