i What this calculator does
Quick answer: Paying or receiving foreign currency in a few months. With the default inputs (foreign amount 50 000, currency US dollars), it returns forward rate of 18.6824.
An importer paying a dollar invoice in four months, a parent paying foreign tuition, an investor funding an offshore account: all of them hold a rand exposure to a rate they cannot control. This calculator prices the three ways of dealing with it. A forward fixes the rate today at a cost set by the interest rate differential; an option sets a worst case for a premium and keeps the upside; doing nothing takes the market rate on the day. Enter the amount, the dates, the rates and the premium, and it returns the rand cost of each across your spot scenarios and the rate at which the forward and the option break even.
The forward rate calculator prices the forward itself; this tool compares the decision. The mechanics of using forex to hedge are in the hedging article and exchange control on the transfer is on the exchange control page.

How the calculation works
The calculator takes two inputs: Win Rate and Number of Trades to Analyse. The expected longest streak is log(N × WinRate) ÷ log(1 ÷ LossRate) ≈ 6.4 trades. Based on random, independent trade outcomes at a fixed win rate, an approximation, not a guarantee. The breakdown also lists 3+ losses in a row, 5+ losses in a row and 7+ losses in a row.
A worked example in rand
With the default inputs (win rate 45% and number of trades to analyse 100), the calculator returns a expected longest losing streak of 6.4 trades, over 100 trades. It also reports chance of 5+ in a row 91.2%, chance of 10+ in a row 10.0% and loss rate 55.0%. Double the win rate to 90 and the expected longest losing streak moves from 6.4 trades to 2.0 trades, the chance of 5+ in a row moves from 91.2% to 0.1% and the chance of 10+ in a row moves from 10.0% to 0.0%.
How to read the result
The headline figure is the expected longest losing streak; the others are there to show where it came from. A 20% drawdown needs a 25% gain to recover and a 50% drawdown needs 100%, so the figure to watch is not the loss but the recovery it demands; most professional accounts treat 20% as the point at which size is cut. The background to this calculation is in Can I Switch Brokers Without Losing My Trading History?.
The South African angle
Three things change the picture for a South African trader using the losing streak calculator. Monte Carlo simulation of a strategy's trade sequence is the standard way to estimate how deep a drawdown it can produce, and most South African retail accounts have never run one. A rand account that funds dollar instruments shows a drawdown when the rand strengthens even if every trade is flat, which is why the currency should be checked before the strategy is blamed. SARS does not allow a trading loss to be set against salary income unless trading is your trade, so a drawdown is also a tax event with no immediate offset for most part-time traders. The figures behind these points, and the ones the losing streak calculator itself uses, are on the South African forex trading statistics.
The three choices
A forward contract is an agreement with a bank or broker to exchange the currencies on the future date at a rate fixed today. The rate is not a forecast: it follows from the interest rate differential, so with rand rates above dollar rates the forward dollar always costs more rand than spot, and that difference is the price of certainty. A currency option gives the right, not the obligation, to exchange at a chosen rate; you pay a premium up front and keep the benefit if the market moves your way. Doing nothing means taking the spot rate on the day, which is the cheapest outcome in a good scenario and the most expensive in a bad one.
Who this is for in South Africa
Importers and exporters hedge through their banks as a matter of routine; the people who usually do not are individuals with a single large foreign payment coming: tuition fees, a property deposit abroad, a car import, an emigration transfer, or an offshore investment funded in tranches. For them the forward is often available through the same bank or a forex intermediary, and the question is whether the certainty is worth its cost. The transfer itself passes through the exchange control allowances, and the rate history on the rand page shows how often a four-month wait has moved the rand by the scenario sizes used here.
Reading the scenario table
The three rows are the rand weaker by your chosen percentage, unchanged, and stronger. The unhedged column swings the most; the forward column is flat across the hedged share; the option column is capped on the bad side and open on the good side, less the premium. The "cheapest" column changes with the scenario, which is the point: no strategy wins everywhere, and the right one depends on which outcome you cannot afford. For a payer, the option beats the forward when the final spot ends below the forward rate by more than the premium per unit, which is the break-even figure in the summary.

Frequently asked questions
Why is the forward rate higher than spot for buying dollars?
Because rand interest rates are higher than dollar rates. Covered interest parity means the forward dollar costs more rand by roughly the differential over the period; at a 3% differential and four months, about 1% more than spot.
Is the forward a prediction of where the rate will be?
No. It is an arbitrage-free price built from today's spot and the two interest rates. The rand can end anywhere relative to it; on average over long periods it has ended weaker than the forward implied, but with wide variation.
Where does an individual get a forward or an option?
Forwards through the major banks' forex desks and through authorised forex intermediaries, usually for amounts from around R100,000 up; options are less common for individuals and are quoted by banks for larger amounts. A CFD position in the pair is the retail equivalent of a forward, with margin and swap instead of a fixed rate.
What hedge ratio should I use?
Hedge the part you cannot afford to lose on. A common approach is to forward 50% to 70% and leave the rest to float, which caps the damage of a sharp rand fall while keeping some benefit from a recovery.
Does hedging have tax consequences?
Gains and losses on a forward or option linked to a personal payment are generally capital in nature and may fall under the CGT rules; a trading position is income. Confirm with a tax practitioner for larger amounts.
Why does the option still cost money if the rand strengthens?
Because the premium is paid up front whatever happens. In the good scenario the option is worthless at expiry and you buy at the better spot rate, so your cost is spot plus the premium you already paid.
