i What this calculator does
Quick answer: The US Dollar Index is a geometric average of six exchange rates in which the euro carries 57.6% of the weight, so it moves mostly with EUR/USD in the opposite direction. With the default inputs the calculator returns uS Dollar Index (DXY): 98.721.
The US Dollar Index, known by its ticker DXY, measures the dollar against a fixed basket of six currencies: the euro, Japanese yen, British pound, Canadian dollar, Swedish krona and Swiss franc. It was set at 100 in March 1973 and has kept the same weights since the euro replaced its predecessor currencies in 1999. Because the weights were fixed then, the index leaves out the Chinese yuan, the Mexican peso and every emerging-market currency, and the euro alone makes up more than half of it.
This calculator rebuilds the index from the six exchange rates with ICE’s published formula and breaks any move into the part each currency explains. That makes it clear when a "strong dollar" headline is really a weak euro. For the rand’s own basket, use the rand basket decomposition calculator.

The formula and its weights
DXY = 50.14348112 × EUR/USD^−0.576 × USD/JPY^0.136 × GBP/USD^−0.119 × USD/CAD^0.091 × USD/SEK^0.042 × USD/CHF^0.036. The exponents are the weights: euro 57.6%, yen 13.6%, pound 11.9%, Canadian dollar 9.1%, krona 4.2% and franc 3.6%. They are negative for EUR/USD and GBP/USD because those pairs are quoted with the dollar second, so a higher rate means a weaker dollar. The constant scales the index to 100 at its 1973 base.
Reading a move
Because the index is a product, its percentage change is the weighted sum of the percentage changes in the six rates. A 1% rise in EUR/USD on its own cuts the index by about 0.57%; a 1% rise in USD/JPY on its own lifts it by about 0.14%. When the dollar rises against the yen and falls against the euro on the same day, the index usually falls. The contribution table shows the split for any set of moves you enter.
What DXY does and does not tell you
DXY is the most quoted dollar measure and is traded as futures, but it is a dollar-against-Europe index more than a global one. Trade-weighted indices published by the Federal Reserve include China, Mexico and other partners and can tell a different story. For a South African, USD/ZAR responds to the broad dollar and to rand-specific factors, which how USD/ZAR trading works explains.

Frequently asked questions
What currencies are in the DXY?
Six: the euro (57.6%), Japanese yen (13.6%), British pound (11.9%), Canadian dollar (9.1%), Swedish krona (4.2%) and Swiss franc (3.6%).
How is the DXY calculated?
As 50.14348112 multiplied by each exchange rate raised to its weight, with negative weights for EUR/USD and GBP/USD because they are quoted with the dollar second.
Why does the DXY move almost exactly opposite to EUR/USD?
Because the euro is 57.6% of the index. A 1% move in EUR/USD alone moves the index by about 0.57% the other way.
Does the DXY include the Chinese yuan?
No. The basket was fixed in 1973 and updated only for the euro in 1999, so the yuan and emerging-market currencies are not included.
What does a DXY of 100 mean?
That the dollar is at the same value against the basket as at the March 1973 base. Above 100 it is stronger, below 100 weaker.
Can I trade the DXY?
Yes, through US Dollar Index futures on ICE and through CFDs offered by many brokers that track those futures.
